Last week I went to the movies for what we call a “chick flick” double feature.
The first movie was Definitely, Maybe or “Def, Maybs” if you are tired. This film is with Ryan Reynolds, Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine), Rachel Weisz, Isla Fisher and Elizabeth Banks. Basically, it’s a guy who is getting divorced and his kid learns about sex and wants to know how he met her mother. It is cute and whatever.
I am just including this information to prep you for what my day looked like. Definitely, Maybe, a little Cheesecake Factory (I had a gift card), and then right into 27 Dresses.
My favorite part of the movie was my sister and I fighting about which sister character we were. I decided she is a younger, prettier bitch and I am attractive with a “personality,” which equals getting walked all over at work and by old high school friends who want you around only when they need a ride somewhere. Those friends did not talk to you until the reunion, and then they realized they did not have someone to take advantage of that wasn’t already in the know…so they become your new and old best friend.
I guess I am angry at someone.
Moving on, 27 Dresses is about a girl (played by Katherine Heigl) who is in love with her boss, but no one knows about it and she is a pushover for weddings. Of course, we find out that Katherine’s sister will meet her boss and fall in love so that Katherine’s character can plan their wedding as well.
All I could think about was something Katherine Heigl has said about her last film, Knocked Up. She said it was “sexist” and that, “It paints the women as shrews, as humorless and uptight, and it paints the men as lovable, goofy, fun-loving guys. I had a hard time with it, on some days. I’m playing such a bitch; why is she being such a killjoy?”
As I watched 27 Dresses, I kept thinking about whether it was any better to play a lonely pushover who runs around planning and helping with weddings because she so badly wants one of her own? A spineless woman who can’t say no?
How pro-fem of Katherine’s character to want to get married soooooo bad, yet not have the balls to talk to her boss.
In Knocked Up, I thought the women appeared to be women in two different situations. Katherine Heigl had what appeared to be her goal job, she owned a car, and actually said what she thought about things. ‘Magine that! Playing a woman going through a pregnancy from a one-night stand that is honest with him about how she feels and has unbottled emotion.
Get a fucking grip, friend. It was a character. I know that now I am rambling, but that is all I could think about.
It was cute! Go see it!
