Is profanity stand-up comedy’s version of steroids? Based on this audio clip, it certainly seems like Jerry Seinfeld thinks so. The clip, taken from this 2001 interview album on which Seinfeld discusses his opinions on all things comedy, features Seinfeld calling the use of profanity a “great shortcut of comedy,” explaining why he doesn’t use it, and agreeing with the interviewer when asked if the guys that do use profanity know that they’re cheating by using it. Pretty interesting stuff. Maybe if Congress gets bored with its baseball investigations, it can turn its attention to rooting out all the “cheaters” in the world of standup.
